A brief history of the orthodox youth mission team

The Orthodox Youth Mission Team was founded out of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Danbury, Connecticut in 2010, by Susan Sulich, Beth Ryzyk, and Fr. Luke Mihaly. What began as a band of one priest, two laywomen, and five youth has grown into a program in which over 300 youth and adults from five jurisdictions and a dozen states have participated over the past fifteen years.

In July 2012, OYMT embarked on its first solo mission trip with Appalachia Service Project, after shadowing a congregational church’s mission team on their 2011 ASP trip. Our local team has grown each year, drawing ACROD, GOARCH, OCA, Antiochian, and Romanian members from a dozen parishes across CT, NY, NJ, and VT. We have always been extremely proud of our return rate; the majority of local participants return for at least a second year!

In 2017, we were invited to participate in a twelve day Orthodox Christian Mission Center mission trip to Napaskiak, Alaska. This was the first time Orthodox youth were permitted to participate in an OCMC mission without a parent accompanying them. We took twenty experienced youth and six adult leaders on this life-changing mission. We planned to return to Napaskiak in 2021, but COVID-19 delayed these plans. We hope to take another experienced team to Alaska in the near future!

By 2018, OYMT was receiving interest from outside the Northeast. In 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, we filled an entire ASP volunteer center (60 volunteer minimum) with our local OYMT team and satellite teams we trained from across the country. In 2019, we had over 80 participants on one trip, and in 2024 and 2025, we had over 60 participants. We’ve trained satellite teams from over a dozen states, some of whom now participate in their own ASP trips and some of whom continue to serve with our local team.

In 2023, Beth Ryzyk retired from her role as Co-Team Coordinator and Lexi Dunne (Klimaszewski) stepped into this role under Susan Sulich’s guidance. Lexi did five OYMT trips as a youth including our Alaska trip before transitioning into Young Adult Leader and Adult Leader roles. In 2025, Susan and Fr. Luke also retired from full-time leadership, but both remain active advisors for the team. Lexi is in her third year as Team Coordinator and Fr. Mircea Geana of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Springfield, Vermont has taken on the role of Spiritual Director/Team Priest for OYMT.

We look forward to the next 15 years!
